# 日本語の国 vocabulary library — sources and licences

[Version française](WORDS-SOURCES.md)

10 October 2026 edition: 2,963 cards, including 674 N5 words, 630 new N4 words and 1,659 new N3 words. Levels are approximate, unofficial and non-exhaustive. Words appearing at several levels are assigned to the most accessible level according to OpenJLPT. Identical spellings may have different readings or meanings.

## Data and adaptations

The selection, levels, spellings, readings, romaji, grammatical types and JMdict identifiers come from [OpenJLPT](https://github.com/evanclan/OpenJLPT), accessed on 10 October 2026, under [CC BY-SA 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/). Its complete attribution notice is in [OPENJLPT-NOTICE.md](OPENJLPT-NOTICE.md), and its licence is in [OPENJLPT-LICENCE.txt](OPENJLPT-LICENCE.txt).

Upstream sources:

- [Jonathan Waller's JLPT resources](https://www.tanos.co.uk/jlpt/): levels and English vocabulary glosses, CC BY, incorporated by OpenJLPT.
- [JMdict — EDRDG](https://www.edrdg.org/wiki/JMdict-EDICT_Dictionary_Project.html): spellings, readings, parts of speech and identifiers, CC BY-SA 4.0. The EDRDG files are the property of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group and are used under its [licence](https://www.edrdg.org/edrdg/licence.html).
- [Tatoeba](https://tatoeba.org/): Japanese examples and French translations, [CC BY 2.0 FR](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/fr/). Sentence identifiers, credited authors and source links remain in the JSON cards. An empty author field means that the export has no attributed author; no author has been invented.

Adaptations by 日本語の国 include N5–N3 selection, preservation of the 24 historical identifiers, French meanings adapted from the English dataset, meaning and example corrections, grammatical type normalization, furigana and original examples identified as such. Examples marked as adapted French translations were translated from OpenJLPT's Japanese/English examples; they are not presented as French translations published on Tatoeba. Other French examples come from Tatoeba's published Japanese/French sentence pairs, sometimes with typographic normalization. Automatic furigana remain a study aid and may vary by context.

The original French draft used the English–French Argos Translate / OPUS-MT model followed by editorial corrections. The English localization added on 12 October 2026 uses static French–English OPUS-MT draft translations alongside existing editorial translations. English dictionary meaning lists come from JMdict English via [jmdict-simplified](https://github.com/scriptin/jmdict-simplified). Adapted English example translations are not attributed to the original French Tatoeba authors as their own English work. Original source authors, sentence IDs and licences remain attached.

Translation models are build tools; the website does not call a translation API. These materials are study resources that can be reviewed and improved, and are not an official JLPT dictionary.

## Redistribution

The adapted `words.json` dataset is distributed under CC BY-SA 4.0, while retaining the attribution and CC BY 2.0 FR rights of Tatoeba sentences. Preserve this notice, upstream notices, links, sentence identifiers and authors when redistributing, and identify your own changes. These data licences do not change the licences of the website's PHP code or images.
