Say who someone is and identify things.
The rule
Noun + は + noun + です. The particle は is pronounced “wa” when it marks the topic. To make a polite negative sentence, use ではありません or じゃありません.
Examples
私は学生です。
I am a student.
これは本です。
This is a book.
Remember
- です politely finishes a nominal sentence.
- In the past: でした; in the negative polite form: ではありません.
In everyday life
私は先生です。
I'm a professor.
昨日は休みでした。
Yesterday was a day of rest.
Common mistake
Do not add です directly after a verb already ending in ます.
