N5 · GRAMMAIRE

Past tense of い and な adjectives

Use adjectives correctly in the past tense.

The rule

A い adjective usually takes かったです in the affirmative past (たかい → たかかったです). An な adjective is built with でした after the radical (しずか → しずかでした).

Examples

きのうはさむかったです。

Yesterday, it was cold.

へやはしずかでした。

The room was quiet.

Remember

Common mistake

Say たかいでした: you don't combine the adjective with い as a noun.
